English Tutoring and Homework Support

Hanau, Germany

(Tuesdays and Thursdays, 14:00 – 17:00)

1. What to Expect

The refugee camp in Hanau, Germany, is located in the fenced area of a former military barrack, whose apartments are now offered to refugees. It is home to around a thousand people, including many children. They are mainly from Syria, Palestine, Iran, Iraq, Kurdistan and Afghanistan, and have mainly Arabic or Farsi as their mother tongue.
Most children living there can already speak good German, as they pick that up at school very quickly. However, many still need support to do their written homework tasks, as well as learning the English Language, which is demanded by German schools.
In partnership with the camp management, All4Aid has been given access to a community centre inside the camp for the purpose of offering English Tutoring and Homework Support to the refugee children (ages 7 to 14) living in the camp.

2. Schedule

Tuesdays & Thursdays, from 14:00 to 17:00 (school term). We encourage volunteers to commit for 3 months, in order to establish positive relationships with the children.

3. What Will You Do

According to your abilities, you can support us in several tasks, such as:

  • Taking the lead Conversational English Classes;
  • Supporting the teacher in the Conversation English Classes;
  • Taking part in educational games and holding simple conversations in English;
  • Helping the children with their homework;
  • Helping to welcome and supervise the children; etc.

You will work alongside a wonderful team of people who have the same heart to serve those in need. You will be able to meet and talk to refugee children and their families, maybe even be invited by them for tea outside the activity hours, once a relationship is established.

4. The Volunteers We Need

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and speak good English. Knowledge of the German would be a great asset, but not necessary. They must have the ability to teach basic English to children (we are not expecting that all volunteers are professional teachers) and display the following characteristics:

Team Player: working well with others and thinking more of the team’s good than of personal preference;

Flexible: willing to make adjustments – and have adjustments made for them – joyfully;

Teachable: open to learn and be taught new things with a positive and responsive attitude;

Compassionate: caring deeply in a tangible way for the needs of those around them;

Respectful: showing dignity to those whom they serve and those whom they serve with;

Encouraging: Intentionally uplifting and building up those around them with their words and actions.

5. Financial Contribution

10 EUR per person, per month

Please note: All4Aid does not demand a payment from those serving with us. We simply request volunteers serving with us to make a donation to All4Aid, with such funds being utilised to help cover the costs of the project where the volunteer will be working and for the direct benefit of the refugees we will serve together.

6. Transportation

You are responsible to make your own arrangements of transportation from home to the camp. All4Aid will not reimburse you for your travel expenses. You might, however, be able to get a ride with other volunteers. We currently have some long term volunteers driving to the camp from Nordend and Preungesheim (Frankfurt) nearly every Tuesday and Thursday.
