Food Bank Lesvos

The food security situation in refugee camps is often problematic. It is not uncommon that meals are distributed in refugee camps in an unequal way, with little consideration given to the number of members within a family, their age, cultural preferences and nutritional needs. It is also not uncommon that the quality of the meals distributed in refugee camps is low. Especially when large quantities of ready meals are delivered by third-party contractors inside camp without rigorous inspection or supervision.

At All4Aid we help address the food insecurity issue in refugee camp communities by running a choice model FoodBank in our community centre. This programme functions as a supplement to the meals some refugees receive inside the camp where they live, as well as a primary source of food for the refugees who, for one reason or another, are not able to receive meals inside the camp. Currently, there are ca. 1000 refugees inside the Mavrovouni camp on Lesvos who are not allowed to access the meals provided in camp.

At the All4Aid FoodBank, refugees collect an amount of food items depending on the size of their family. All items are handed out for free. The refugees can choose what they like and can use best. Refugees who have electricity in their dwellings in camp might choose lentils, rice, oil and flour, as they can plug a hotplate to cook food. The refugees who do not have electricity access – and sometimes not even a dwelling – might choose food items such as instant noodles, sardines, tuna and other tin food.

All the food items we distribute in our FoodBank are purchased with your donations!
